Inside China’s Fake Birkin Industry: Separating Truth from Viral Lies

Updated: Sep 22

Tanner Leatherstein investigates China's fake Birkin bag industry in 'TikTok Trade Wars IV,' exposing the truth behind viral luxury counterfeits.

Watch the videos here:

A Replica Birkin and a Viral Claim

I just came back from China with a Birkin in my hand. Of course, it wasn’t the real thing—it was a replica, straight from the markets and workshops where much of the counterfeit leather trade thrives. After spending a full week exploring China’s leather districts, meeting artisans, and seeing replica production up close, I came home with plenty of answers about how this world operates. But just as I was unpacking my thoughts, I stumbled on a video from a Chinese influencer making bold claims about Birkin bags—claims that I was now in a position to fact-check with fresh, firsthand knowledge.

The Influencer’s Story vs. Reality

The influencer in question laid out his version of how much a Birkin costs to make, where the materials come from, and even how Hermès supposedly outsources its work. Some of what he said turned out to be surprisingly accurate. But most of it? False. And one major claim he previously pushed—that 80% of luxury bags are made in China—was conspicuously absent this time. After asking around among people who have worked in the counterfeit business for years, I was reassured that Hermès has never produced bags in China. That part of his story simply doesn’t hold up.

What’s True in His Breakdown

To give credit where it’s due, not everything in his video was a lie. Take the thread, for example. He claimed that Hermès uses a thread called Fil Au Chinois, which literally translates to “Chinese Thread.” That part is completely true, and it was fascinating to confirm. The same goes for crocodile leather. He said a Birkin in crocodile requires three hides, which is a reasonable estimate, and valued them at about $4,000. If those skins are tanned and treated to Hermès standards, that price makes sense.

Another point worth highlighting is his acknowledgment of artisan labor. Chinese artisans are indeed extremely skilled, often on par with or even surpassing their French counterparts in terms of speed and consistency. While Hermès artisans in France earn around €1700–1800 per month, skilled saddle stitchers in China earn about $1400–1700. The pay gap is smaller than most people assume. The difference lies in the working hours and speed. If a bag takes 40 hours to complete, it’s clear that the labor cost doesn’t reach the $1000 mark he suggested.

The Lies That Sell Replicas

Where his claims completely fell apart was in the details designed to inflate the “cost” of replicas. For instance, he insisted that the gold-plated stainless steel hardware on a Birkin costs $600. Having produced hardware for my own brand, STOW, I can confidently say that’s pure fiction. The same goes for zippers—Hermès does use Riri zippers, but the idea that one could cost $300 is laughable.

Even the lining leather was misrepresented. While he claimed that French sheepskin lines the bags, most Birkins actually use goat. Even if it were lambskin, the cost would top out around $70–80, not the $150 he claimed. These inflated numbers are all part of the sales pitch: by exaggerating the cost of production, counterfeiters make a $6,000 fake feel like a “bargain” compared to the $90,000 boutique price.

The Business of Misinformation

This is where the influencer’s logic completely unravels. His final pitch was essentially: “Why pay $90,000 when you can get the same bag for $6,000?” On the surface, it sounds like a consumer-friendly deal. But in reality, it’s a misinformation campaign aimed at selling high-end fakes for thousands of dollars. By framing $6,000 as a steal compared to $90,000, counterfeiters manipulate buyers into thinking they’re getting insider access to “real value.” It’s smart business, but it’s built on lies.

The Real Takeaway from China

Beyond the smoke and mirrors of replica sales, the real story in China is much more exciting. The country has incredible talent in leatherworking and decades of accumulated expertise. What I witnessed during my trip wasn’t just the counterfeit market—it was a leather industry on the verge of transformation. Visionary entrepreneurs are working to channel those skills into authentic, original products. The factories I visited, the artisans I spoke with, and the innovations I saw point to a future where China isn’t just the world’s workshop but a true hub for leather creativity and craftsmanship.

Closing Thoughts

So yes, the influencer’s video was entertaining, but it was also misleading. The truth is less flashy and harder to package into a viral soundbite, but it’s out there if you’re willing to dig. China is not secretly producing Hermès bags, nor does it cost anywhere near $6,000 to make a replica Birkin. What matters more is the talent and innovation bubbling under the surface of China’s leather industry—a story I’ll continue to share in the coming weeks. Until then, stay leathertained.
